10 Consecutive Life Sentences?

19 Aug

BTK killer gets maximum life sentence – 10 consecutive life sentences huh? I’ve always found the idea of consecutive life sentences redundant. Wouldn’t one life sentence without the possibility of parole cover it? I guess I don’t understand the law well enough to truly comprehend the meaning behind these sentences. Or maybe it’s some half hearted attempt of the justice system to provide some proof to the victims that they are really throwing the book at the guy. 10 consecutive life sentences sure sounds more impressive than 1 life sentence. Well maybe if you’re a cat. The article says that the judge assigned a sentence of a minimum of 175 years which was the maximum allowed by the laws of the state. So does that mean that a life sentence amounts to 17.5 years? Where did that number come from? The last time I checked or heard the life expectancy for the average American male is 76 years or so. Thinking about it some more maybe they extrapolate the number based on the convicted person’s actual age at the time of conviction. BTK (aka Dannis Rader) is 60 years old. That works out about right. If that’s how they figure up the number I can kind of see it but it all still seems redundant to me. Why not just say Dear Mr. Scumbag. Since the laws of our state do not permit the taking of your life in a manner equal to the methods by which you took your victims lives, we hereby sentence you to live the rest of your life behind bars with no chance for parole. Simple. To the point. Short and concise. Alas our laws are not simple. I guess I’ll never understand the ins and outs of our country’s legal system.

Plane Struck By Lightning – Check out these images of a plane being struck by lightning. They’re ‘striking’ to say the least. Based on the caption at the bottom of the page this appears to have happened near Osaka, Japan. That’s a bit scary for me because as I type this my parents are flying back home to Okinawa. They have to fly through Osaka to get home. Gulp. I hope the weather is bright and sunny when they get there. Very cool pictures though.
