Mexico Wrap Up

02 Jun

Well our Mexico trip is effectively over. I’m writing this from a Microtel hotel on the outskirts of Dallas. In an effort to protect my ability to contribute to the creation of my future children I’ll try to keep this brief (warm laptop sitting on the lap can’t be good for the ‘little soldiers’).

The trip was great. We accomplished a lot. I got to meet a bunch of good people. It feels like we did some good work for the kingdom down there. The week has flown by. I find myself wishing we could have stayed another week. The original worksite looks like a completely different place than it did when we started on Monday. The foundation and footers have been poured and cement blocks have been placed in preparation for the dirt fill that will be dumped in to make the whole site level. We found a solution to the too many people not enough jobs on the worksite problem too. Yesterday they split us into two groups. One group stayed at the original site while a second group went to an old site there in Acuna. 6 years ago our group helped construct a church building there. Due to tremendous church growth at that location they needed to expand so we went there and laid the ground work for a new education building. I was a part of this second group. There were about 30 of us. Things went much more smoothly having the smaller group on hand. Not having something to do was a thing of the past. Everybody had a job which was a nice change of pace. I helped dig the ditches for the foundation and footers in addition to helping to bend rebar and create the rebar columns. It was fun. Having steady work to do throughout the day made the time fly by.

This trip is the most fun I’ve had in a long time. Our associate minister, Michael Jones, has been my roommate for the week. (I’m using his laptop to type this.) He is a plum fool. Mike has had us in stitches the entire week. If you need someone to tell a funny story Mike’s your man. He’s got a million of them. I thought we were going to get kicked out of the restaurant we were eating at last night we were laughing so hard. I’m definitely glad he came on the trip with us. It wouldn’t have been the same without him.

The end of the trip means a return to the norm. Back to the everyday grind. I so don’t want to go back to work on Monday. But alas life goes on. There’s always next year. Del Rio, Texas and Acuna, Mexico will forever hold a special place in my heart. Peace out.
